The city of Guri, Gyeonggi-do, (Mayor Park Young-soon) signed MOUs on Aug. 27 with Lotte Engineering & Construction Co. as a construction investor, and Meritz Investment Bank Securities and Hana Daewoo Securities as strategic investors, for cooperation in creating Guri World Design City (GWDC).

With the city of Guri, Guri Urban Corporation, and K&C Associates signing MOUs with these three entities, they are ready to cooperate in strategic and construction investments needed for the GWDC business in preparation for the lifting of restrictions on the development of the green belt area.

Mayor Park Young-soon said, “Representing the combination of MICE and design industries, the GWDC business can be an alternative solution to a stagnant domestic economy, which is currently in need for a new engine of growth." He added that he is pleased that 3 additional companies joined the effort in addition to the 9 companies including Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co. that have already signed MOUs in July.

Park commented, “The creation of the GWDC will prompt creation of 11 million jobs in areas of design, service, logistics, and tourism. At least 2,000 global companies will moved to the city, which will have a positive impact on the national economy, not to mention the economy of Guri.” He added, “In the near future, Guri will be Asia's first international hub of design.”

A representative of one of the companies that attended the event responded by saying, “We are proud to be part of a large scale project like the GWDC.” Another representative added, “We will continuously work to contribute to the GWDC business, as the latter represents the so-called creative economy strategy.”

The city of Guri has so far signed MOUs with Hyundai Engineering & Constribution Co., GS E&C Co., POSCO A&C, Hoban Construction Co., Seohee Construction, Shindonga Construction Co., Kunyoung, Bookook Securities Co., and Korea Asset Trust Co. On July 9, the city of Guri participated in a launching ceremony with 9 companies attending the event. In early Sept., the city of Guri will host a launching ceremony for the consortium and forum, with 12 companies expected to attend.
