European Introduction

The Korea National Railway announced on May 23 that a consortium, which has bid 43 billion won (US$33 million), was selected to participate in the bid for design services for a high-speed railway between Katowice and Ostrava. This bid was issued by the Solidarity Transport Hub (STH) in Poland in February of this year.

Poland has been advancing a project since 2020 to construct a total of 1,800 km of high-speed railway that will connect the new airport and major hub cities. The Katowice-Ostrava section, where the Korea National Railway will be participating in the design, is also a 96 km international railway route connecting Poland and the Czech Republic.

In February 2022, the Korea National Railway, along with Dohwa Engineering, formed the K-consortium for the design and supervision of the Polish high-speed railway and passed a pre-qualification review amid competition with renowned engineering companies from France, Sweden, and other countries.

In an effort to introduce Korean railway technology to Europe, which has high technical barriers to entry, the Korea-Poland High-Speed Railway Technology Cooperation Forum was held in Warsaw, Poland, in April last year.
