Four data center efficiency enhancement models proposed by Korea were discussed at the ISO/IEC JTC1 SC39 meeting held in France on June 22. Final approvals are around the corner for three of them, and the other one has received approval for development as well.

The models discussed at this time include the Data Center Performance Index and the Comprehensive Data Center Efficiency Evaluation Method developed by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), the Nomura Research Institute, and the Energy-efficiency Computing Model developed by ETRI.

Those standard models that were developed in Korea are drawing a lot of attention as viable international standard candidates. For example, the final voting is close at hand for ETRI’s Energy-efficiency Computing Model, and the approval of the draft is expected for the Improvement of Efficiency of Data Center Resources, which Sungkyul University professor Choi Jeong-yeol and the Korea IT Service Industry Association are working on together. The Server Energy Efficiency-based Data Center Performance Index and Cost-based Data Center Efficiency Evaluation Index Model are currently being prepared for draft adoption, too.

At present, Korea is one of the most active countries in international standardization regarding data center energy efficiency enhancement. The ISO/IEC JTC1 subcommittee is currently discussing nine standard models in total, and Korea is participating in five of them.
