The New Year of the Tiger is upon us. We hope the New Year will be filled with happy and productive events and activities for Korea and the world. We also hope Korea will successfully host the G20 Meeting later this year and that all those participating will find effective solutions to global problems.

In this month’s issue, BusinessKorea deals with the economic outlook as its cover story. Many economic organizations at home and abroad generally agreed that the Korean economy will definitely rebound from the long tunnel of the global economic slump. The cover story also contains forecasts on Korea’s eight major industries, including steel, automobiles, telecommunications, and construction. The new business plans of large Korean companies for the New Year are also included in the cover story. These large Korean companies include Samsung Electronics, the Hyundai Group, the LG Group and POSCO.

In late December, good news came to Korea from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Korean consortium led by Korea Electric Power Corp. (KOPEC) won a mammoth-sized contract to build four nuclear power plants in the UAE. We hope nuclear power plants will be a major export item of Corporate Korea in the future. Therefore, our Special Report covered this theme with stories on the Korean government’s view of exporting nuclear power plants, business activities and plans of Korean companies in the nuclear power plant industry, such as KOPEC, Doosan Heavy Industries, Samsung C&T, Hyundai Engineering and Construction and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co.

In addition, 2010-2012 Visit Korea Year, a three-year campaign to promote Korea as an international tourist destination begins this year. BusinessKorea met with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Visit Korea Year Committee’s Sonia Hong and the Seoul city government’s Lim Ok-ki to hear about each entity’s strategies and plans to promote tourism in Korea. We believe the Korean tourism industry will enjoy a boom thanks to this new campaign.

We also expect our readers to enjoy stories on the New Year speech by President Lee, new business strategies of Korean banks, the revision of the Sejong City Plan, the MBA program of the Seoul National University Graduate School of Business, the launch of the A380 airplane service by Emirates between Korea and the UAE, the 27th IASP World Conference on Science & Technology Parks and the 2010 World Smart Grid Forum.
