Mission Critical

SK Telecom presented a direction toward the evolution of 5G networks and the blueprint at a meeting of ITU-T's Focus Group, aimed at analyzing the network standardization requirements of 5G, held in San Diego, U.S., on June 9.

Korea's largest carrier, which made 5G architecture public at the event, classified the 5G system into services, platforms, and high-speed infrastructure, and suggested customer experience, connectivity, intellectualization, efficiency, and reliability as five core values for next-gen communications.

In addition, the mobile carrier predicted that the evolved form of the Internet of Things (IoT), immersive multimedia services based on augmented or virtual reality, and a mission critical system will be offered to customers in the 5G era. A mission critical system refers to a system that is essential to the survival of a business or organization. Hence, if the system fails or is interrupted, business operations will be significantly affected.

Since a massive amount of important information is sent via mobile telecommunication networks in these services, it is essential to guarantee the function of end-to-end networks from wireless to wired network sections. Much expanded network capacity and ultra-low delay transmission are also necessary.

An official at SKT explained that these kinds of services could be actualized with technologies that can bring about overall innovations in the network structure, including network function virtualization and software-defined networking.
