Samsung will open a total of its 38,000 patents in various sectors including mobile devices, display, communication, semiconductor and energy. Among them, 3,400 patents will be provided free of charge.

Samsung announced on June 7 that it will open its registered patents that are owned by Samsung Electronics, Samsung Display, Samsung SDI, and Samsung Electro-Mechanics to small and medium-sized and venture companies and individual entrepreneurs through the creative economy innovation centers in Daegu-Kyeongbuk in a bid to energize the local venture ecosystem.

Also, the company will send its experienced experts to the creative economy innovation centers in Daegu-Kyeongbuk and provide matching services that offer patents needed by smaller companies in order to strengthen the patent competitiveness of small and medium-sized companies. The matching service will be first provided to 120 small and medium sized companies that are supported by the creative economy innovation centers in Daegu-Kyeongbuk, and will be gradually expanded to other companies further.

In order to do so, patent experts will visit small and medium-sized companies and propose suitable patents that will be opened after consulting about the needed technologies and products for new businesses.

Samsung will also provide “patent mentoring” that offer information from patent application to utilization.

In particular, Samsung Electronics will open additional patents, which are not registered yet, after their registration.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics will use a certain part of the profits from patents that are provided at a cost to support small and medium-sized companies.
