Romania Interested in Korean Weapons

A K2 Black Panther tank from Hyundai Rotem

Romanian military personnel visited Hyundai Rotem and Hanwha Aerospace on Jan. 31. They looked around Hyundai Rotem’s K2 tank and armored vehicle plant and Hanwha Aerospace’s K9 howitzer and Redback IFV plant that day.

In December last year, Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca visited South Korea with six ministers and discussed bilateral cooperation in the defense industry. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis is about to visit South Korea and the discussion is expected to expand.

According to experts, Romania is interested in Hanwha Aerospace’s ammunition as well as the howitzer and the tank. “Romania is fully dependent on imported ammunition and is planning to eliminate the dependence,” one of them said, adding, “Hanwha Aerospace is expected to join its self-production as a partner.”

Romania had about 400 tanks until recently and the current count is less than that with 60 or so T-72 tanks provided for Ukraine. With its most powerful tanks provided for it without exception, the Romanian army is planning to import new and better tanks.
