The Korea Cadastral Survey Corporation was renamed to the Korea Land and Geospatial Informatix Corporation, or LX Corporation, on June 4 to fulfill its role as the national agency representing Korea in handling spatial information.

The predecessor, established in 1977, was responsible for national cadastral surveys, protection of the property rights of the people, and effective management of the territory for 38 years. From now on, the LX Corporation is to be in charge of public functions for the development of the spatial information sector as well as the aforementioned tasks. Its new roles include the consolidation of the sector with the other industries and the popularization of information and communication technology services based on location and geospatial information.

The first key project of the LX Corporation is the establishment of a national spatial information portal, which kicked off on June 4. This project has been running since May last year by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, the Korea Cadastral Survey Corporation, the Korea Land and Housing Corporation, and the Spatial Information Industry Promotion Institute.

The idea is to form a single, all-in-one portal by consolidating 11 organizations’ spatial information systems and data so that the public can have more convenient access to the information they need. The LX Corporation is scheduled to complete the project by 2017 as the project leader.
