Hitting a New High of US$30.45 Billion

Foreign direct investment in South Korea reached a new high of US$30.45 billion (3,463 cases) last year.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on Jan. 3 that foreign direct investments in South Korea totaled US$30.45 billion (3,463 cases) last year, the largest since records began in 1962. The figures were US$29.51 billion and 3,088 cases in 2021. The investments are reported ones.

Actual investments added up to US$18.03 billion, the second-largest. The record high, US$18.6 billion, was recorded in 2021.

Last year, 54.4 percent and 41 percent of the investments went to the service and manufacturing sectors, respectively. 4.6 percent went to other industries, including agriculture, livestock, gas and electricity. Year on year, the investment in manufacturing increased 149.4 percent and that in service decreased 29.6 percent. That in the rest increased 47.7 percent.

Investments reported from the United States increased 65.2 percent to US$8.69 billion. Those reported from Japan increased 26.3 percent to US$1.53 billion. Those from the Greater China Region and the EU region decreased 31.6 percent and 36.9 percent to US$5.16 billion and US$8.68 billion, respectively.
