The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on Dec. 22 (local time) that Samsung Electronics will recall 663,500 washers in the United States due to fire risk.

The recall will apply to the company's top-load super speed washers (WA49B, WA50B, WA51A, WA52A, WA54A and WA55A models) in four colors sold from June of last year to December 2022.

The CPSC urged consumers using those washing machines to receive software updates provided by Samsung Electronics and to refrain from using them before that.

In the case of models equipped with Wi-Fi devices, automatic updates are possible when connected to the internet. Otherwise, software updates should be made using a peripheral device (dongle) provided free of charge by Samsung Electronics, CPSC said.

Samsung Electronics had previously received 51 reports of smoking, melting, overheating and fires related to the models to be recalled, including 10 cases of property damage and three cases of injuries from smoke inhalation, CPSC added.
