Green Light?

Yoon Sang-hyun, the special political advisor for President Park Geun-hye who visited Russia on May 8 to attend the Victory in Europe Day ceremony, met with Kim Young-nam, president of the Supreme People's Assembly of North Korea, in Russia on May 10.

Both of them stayed in Russia as special envoys. Experts are paying keen attention to the possibility of better relations between the two Koreas, since the messenger of the South Korean President met with a high-ranking official from the North.

It is said that Mr. Yoon stressed the importance of joint efforts for fence mending during his meeting with Mr. Kim, while expressing his opinions on major issues such as humanitarian aid and economic cooperation. Still, some people have remarked that few meaningful messages would have been exchanged between the two, because the meeting was an impromptu one.

“Policy relating to North Korea is very complicated and require the thorough understanding of the reality and a very prudent approach,” the Office of the President of South Korea explained, continuing, “The meeting between the special political advisor and the president of the Supreme People's Assembly was a casual encounter, and it should not be interpreted as politically significant.”
