Doosan Energy and Samsung C&T will participate in a pilot small module reactor (SMR) project in Ukraine.

According to the U.S. State Department on Nov. 13, U.S. Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry and Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko announced a pilot SMR project at the 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP 27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, on Nov. 12 (local time).

The project is intended to verify the feasibility of producing clean hydrogen and ammonia using an SMR and high-temperature water electrolysis (solid oxide electrolysis). It is a part of the Foundation Infrastructure for Responsible Use of SMR Technology (FIRST) program, which was launched by the U.S. government.

The U.S. State Department explained that this project is aimed at building infrastructure for Ukraine’s energy security, carbon dioxide reduction, and long-term food security.

The project will be promoted by NuScale Power, Clark Seed, Fuelcell Energy and Argonne National Laboratory of the United States, Energoatom of Ukraine, Doosan Enerbility and Samsung C&T of Korea, which will form a multinational consortium for the project.
