KHNP Likely to Win 2nd NPP Project

Westinghouse has become the company to build Poland’s first nuclear power plants. The American nuclear power company beat EDF and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) in the project to build six pressurized water reactors, 6 to 9 GW each.

Experts point out that South Korea needs to cooperate with Westinghouse in the project based on its nuclear energy agreement with the United States. According to them, Westinghouse used to be the global leader in the industry, but now it is almost incapable of building a nuclear power plant on its own due to its lack of experience since its accident in Pennsylvania in 1979.

“South Korea is very good at building multiple standardized nuclear power plants in the same place efficiently and economically,” one of them said, adding, “Westinghouse’s building capabilities are currently insufficient and South Korea still can take part in the project as a key equipment supplier.”

In the meantime, Polish news outlets reported that state-run PGE, private energy company Zepak and KHNP would sign a letter of intent in Seoul on Oct. 31. It is about Poland’s second nuclear power plant construction project, in which its thermal power plants in Patnow will be replaced with nuclear power plants.
