As sparkling wines are sweet and refreshing with a natural fizz, more and more wine lovers drink them. In the future, a wide variety of sparkling wines will attract more Korean consumers with unique characteristics such as French champagne with deeper and decent taste and flavor, Italian Spumante with a more popular and general style, and Spanish Cava with excellent value at low prices.

The wine industry has announced that domestic wine consumption last year reached 40 million bottles. Among them, repurchases of sparkling wines are growing at an annual rate of more than 10 percent. Despite the decrease in consumption, sparkling wine is rather seeing a growth of 19.2 percent by sale amount and 17.5 percent by sale quantity this year.

As the consumption trend has changed in the domestic wine market, wine importers are also getting more attention. Also, the fact that a growing number of wine lovers are turning to sparkling wines is proven once again at the 13th Seoul International Wines & Spirits Expo, which was held at COEX in Samseong-dong, Seoul, last week.

The most noteworthy event during the Expo was the blind taste test of wines sold at restaurants and hotels, which was hosted by Wine For You Marble Inc. When visitors had a sip of the sparkling wines imported from Italy, they were impressed with the taste.

In particular, the company announced that it took first place with a high mark of sparking wines in the blind taste test, which was first launched at the Wines & Spirits Expo.

On the blind taste test, 50 participants of diverse occupational clusters, including hotel employees, restaurant managers, wine clubs, students majoring in hotel management, sommeliers, housewives, and overseas buyers selected sparkling wines as the best wines for its excellent taste, flavor, and smooth taste and feel on the throat when swallowing.

Wine For You Marble Inc. CEO Kim Min-jae said, “The domestic wine market is expanding day by day, and an increasing number of people is turning into sparkling wines, which are refreshing natural wines with great taste, from conventional white and red wines.”

Wine For You Marble Inc. is a leading company in the domestic wine industry. The company has been steadily supplying fine overseas wines to wine lovers at home for 22 years since it tapped the domestic wine market in 1992. In particular, the company has the exclusive rights for importation and distribution of Riunite, the leading source of classic wines from Northern Italy's Emilia Romagna Region, which ranks fourth in the total wine production around the world.

Sparkling wines are being introduced as natural wines without synthetic preservative or sorbic acid, which is used in conventional wines, so that there is no ingredient toxic to the system. Notably, it is the product to achieve the international quality certificate ISO 9002 for the first time in the world. Currently, the product is sold in countries around the world, including the U.S., Canada, Japan, the U.K., France and Germany.

In fact, sparking wines have simple and smooth feelings on the throat when swallowing and have no hangover the next day even with the excessive consumption.

Sparkling wines go well with Tex-Mex, including seafood and pasta, Indian, Thai and Chinese Sichuan Cuisine as its snacks. Also, it is effective in not only preventing aging but also stimulating appetite and metabolism.

Wine For You Marble Inc. confidently recommends sparkling wines with the light brown color of Moscato grapes, the excellent fruity fragrance and the soft and sweet flavors.

Currently, the products with various packaging are being sold at low prices of the level of 10,000 won (about US$10) in the wine section at major retail outlets, including Home Plus.

The company’s CEO Kim Min-jae said, “Since the trend of “well-being” is spreading to all over even to wines, it is the perfect product to simply relieve stress with a glass of sparkling wines.”

Meanwhile, the hosts of the Seoul International Wines & Spirits Expo, which is the only exhibition in Korea dedicated to wines and spirits, said, “Escaping from the mainstream of hard liquor, more and more people are drinking the wines with less than 8 percent of alcoholicity.”

The tentative calculations indicate that approximately 50,000 visitors attended the 13th Seoul International Wines & Spirits Expo for three days from April 23 to 25.

The Expo was participated by Korea Wine Association, Korea International Sommelier Association and Korea Bartenders Association.
