ASEAN Growth

Daum Kakao (CEO Lee Sir-goo) is planning to take over Path Classic, which is the most popular messenger application in Indonesia. Path Classic has more than 30 million users in the Southeast Asian country.

Path, the service provider, is headquartered in San Francisco. It is predicted to remain an independent corporation even after the sale of the messenger application service. Daum Kakao, which is recording a high market share in the Korean market with its KakaoTalk messenger service, is expected to be able to expand its business in Southeast Asia once it takes over Path Classic. The Indonesian market, in particular, is the largest one in the region – Indonesia has a population of more than 250 million – and this is why a large number of industry experts are paying much attention to the news about the possible acquisition of Path Classic by one of the mobile messenger market leaders in Korea.

In the meantime, Daum Kakao said that nothing has been determined yet, although it is true that its working-level employees examined the acquisition of the messenger service as reported by U.S. IT news channel re/code on April 21 (local time).
