Preliminary Compensation

Asiana Airlines announced on April 18 that it decided to pay US$5,000 (5.4 million won) to all passengers on board its flight that skidded off the runway after hitting a communications tower while landing at Japan's Hiroshima Airport recently.

The airlines posted the announcement on its Japanese web site that it would pay the amount as temporary compensation to all passengers on flight OZ162, which had set off from Incheon International Airport to Hiroshima, so that they could use it for inconveniences after the accident.

An official from Asiana Airlines said that it would be the first compensation regardless of the degree of damage, and that the company would figure out an additional settlement with the passengers later when actual damage compensation for the accident is detrmined.

Meanwhile, the Japan Transport Safety Board (JTSB) believes that both engines of the Asiana Airlines plane smashed into a communications antenna 300 meters away from the runway, and then its left engine hit the ground.

It will take two years for the JTSB to file a final investigation report for the accident.
