SK Hynix has developed a 100-megapixel image sensor. The company is expediting the launch of high-pixel image sensors to change the two-runner race between Sony and Samsung Electronics.

On Oct. 6, SK Hynix introduced Hi-A811, a 108-megapixel image sensor for smartphones at SEDEX 2022 held at COEX in Seoul. It is the first time that SK Hynix has publicly disclosed an image sensor with 100 million pixels or more. Last year, it developed a 50-megapixel product.

The image sensor market is expanding rapidly as cameras are loaded into mobility devices and various home appliances. In particular, Samsung Electronics launched the world’s first 100-megapixel image sensor last year and a 200-megapixel image sensor this year, heating up competition with Sony, which holds a 40 percent market share.

In 2020, SK Hynix was ranked seventh with a 2 percent share of the global image sensor market.
