SK Telecom and Pixtree have co-developed a real time high definition hardware encoder, SK Telecom said it a press release on April 10.

The encoder only takes 0.5 seconds from input to output during a compression of a video, the company said.

The encoder employs High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) technology which is described as the “compression/decompression technology of the next generation,” the company said.

Professor Kim Mun-chul at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology told Business Korea that the compression in 0.5 seconds is a “very high standard.”

The HEVC encoder can compress high definition video of up to 15Gbps into as small as 25Mbps, the company said. It also enables multiple broadcast channels to be seen on one screen without any deterioration of image quality, which the company called the “multi-view function.”

Park Jin-hyo, senior vice president and head of the Network Technology R&D Center at SK Telecom, wished the HEVC Encoder to contribute to South Korea’s competence in the global media market.

SK Telecom and Pixtree are going to participate in the 2015 NAB Show in Las Vegas from April 13 to promote the HEVC Encoder worldwide, SK Telecom said.
