The National Geographic Information Institute (NGII) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) announced on September 3 that they would impart South Korea’s up-to-date spatial information technologies to eight developing countries’ 20 government employees.

South Korea has accumulated experience and knowledge in the field of geographic information system (GIS) database establishment and related policy development since 1994 based on its national spatial data infrastructure (NSDI). A number of foreign governments have asked the South Korean government to share the experience and knowledge. In response to the requests, the NGII has run global training programs for developing countries since 2011.

The upcoming program is to help those countries establish their own NSDIs so that their national land development and planning can be facilitated. The program, which is based on the current situations of each of the countries and their specific requests, covers basic knowledge on national surveying and mapping, related policy planning, GIS utilization, etc.

It also covers processes for the production and management of national maps and reference positioning systems, for which the eight developing countries have made a lot of requests. The NGII and the KOICA are expecting that South Korea’s advanced knowledge and technology will be highly utilized abroad through the program.
