The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on August 29 that the ministry will hold the 18th Korea-Russia Nuclear Power Joint Coordination Committee meeting with the Federal Agency for Atomic energy, or Rosatom in Moscow on August 30 and 31.

At the meeting, the two sides will discuss technological cooperation in various fields such as nuclear safety, nuclear dismantlement, waste management, and radiation application. In particular, Korea will propose new agendas such as nuclear power plant dismantling technology, the management of waste from dismantled nuclear power plants, the development of new materials for radiation application and the development of nuclear power cells.

Agendas in the safety sectors will include cooperation between regulatory agencies, cooperation in the continuation of radiation emergency response, and those in the dismantlement sector will cut across the development of dismantling technology and containers of waste from dismantled power plants among others.

Apart from cooperation in the field of fuel research and development, both sides will bring up the expansion of exchanges of information and joint research on isotope production technology using proton accelerator, the development of neutron transmission technology, new material development and nuclear cells among others.

The meeting will be attended by experts from both sides’ nuclear-related organizations including Korea's chief delegate Bae Tae-min who is the director general of major public research policies at the Ministry of Science and his Russian counterpart Pershukov, deputy director general for innovation management at Rosatom.

The Korea-Russia Nuclear Power Joint Coordination Commission has been held alternately in two countries every two years since 1991.
