The National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE) under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) announced on July 2 that it will hold “Korea-China-Japan Governments Standards Cooperation Conference” and “Northeast Asia Standards Cooperation Form” at Lotte City Hotel in Jeju from the 3rd to 5th. The meetings will be participated in by directors of the standards department and non-government experts in the three countries.

According to the NITE, South Korea, China and Japan will discuss ways to standardize electrically-powered boards and drones, to contribute to regional standardization organization Pacific Area Standards Congress (PASC) and to cooperate in standards for joint market creation at senior officials meeting.

The NITE said, “We will also ask for support for candidate for director of the policy planning committee at the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) which is to increase influence on the international standardization stage.”

Moreover, South Korea will share the preparation status for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the current conditions of new technology converged product safety management, including battery explosion, by introducing the standardization strategies of the three countries at bilateral meetings with China and Japan. The three countries will also discuss plans to jointly develop international standards and cooperate in international standardization activities.

South Korea plans to propose a unified good distribution practice (GDP) for medical devices at the forum, while China will suggest to unify standardized technical terms for better communication between the three countries. In addition, the three countries will talk about six cooperation projects including electronic scanning probe microscope, according to the NITE.

South Korea has secured the fundamental technology for electronic scanning probe microscope which is widely used in semiconductors, displays, nano electronics and wearable electronic devices. Accordingly, the technology is considered the sector which will have the global competitiveness in the next generation electronics industry when it is adopted as international standards in the future.

The NITE said, “Standards will become more important as a means to eliminate trade technical barriers at the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and FTA agreements between South Korea, China and Japan. We will continuously boost cooperation in standards between the three countries.”
