Samsung Electronics announced on November 22 that it reorganized itself to set up an artificial intelligence (AI) center and strengthen the role of the Samsung Strategy & Innovation Center (SSIC) while maintaining the current structure consisting of the Consumer Electronics (CE), IT & Mobile (IM), and Device Solutions (DS) Divisions.

In the CE and IM Divisions, Samsung Electronics combined its DMC Research Institute with its Software Center to launch Samsung Research. The AI Center is a part of Samsung Research to conduct research on AI. The AI Center is headed by senior managing director Lee Keun-bae, who was the head of the AI Team at the Software Center.

At the same time, Samsung Electronics strengthened the role of SSIC President Sohn Young-kwon. “This is to respond timely to today's fast-changing business environments and better ensure future growth opportunities,” the company explained.

President Sohn was scouted by Samsung Electronics in August 2012, when it established the SSIC in the Silicon Valley. He is currently in charge of R&D of autonomous driving and AI and M&A for the same purpose. From now on, he will be responsible for R&D activities of Samsung Electronics as a whole and continue to work as the chairman of the board of Harman International so that the two companies can create synergy with each other.
