Baek Woon-kyu, the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy of Korea, will visit major nations that may import nuclear power plants such as Britain, France and Czech Republic with Cho Hwan-ik president of the Korea Electric Power Corporation and Lee Kwan-seop, president of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Corporation in order to support Korean companies in landing orders for nuclear power plants, said trade, industry and energy minister Baek in a press conference in the government complex in Sejong City, Korea on November 20.

Minister Baek repeatedly said during the recent parliamentary inspection of the administration among others that he would directly sell Korean-type nuclear power plants overseas, apart from a nuclear phase-out policy. "In the UK, I will directly promote the export of nuclear power plants while meeting with the Secretary of Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS). I will discuss the dismantlement of nuclear power in France," the minister said.

"Minister Baek will actively support Korea companies' winning of orders for overseas nuclear power plants, concentrate on cooperation in the nuclear power plant construction and dismantling industry, the joint development of new industry technology and the inducement of the EU’s investment in Korea and others,” the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) said about the minister’s visit to Europe. In particular, minister Baek will meet with key officials from the UK and the Czech Republic to express the Korean government’s will for the export of nuclear power plants and discuss concrete measures for that.

In detail, minister Baek will pay a visit to business and energy secretary Greg Clark of the UK to discuss cooperation between the two countries in nuclear power plant construction and demolition, and key areas of the fourth industrial revolution on November 26 and 27. In particular, minister Baek will discuss ways for Korean companies including KEPCO and KHNP to participate in new nuclear power projects such as Mooreside Nuclear Power Plant in the UK.

Minister Baek will then meet with Nicolas Hulot, minister of ecological and solidary transition of France and also attended the ministerial-level dialogue and the new technology industry cooperation forum of France in France for two days (Nov. 28 - 29). As the last leg of his trip, minister Baek will visit the Czech Republic (Nov. 30 - Dec. 1), have meetings with political figures and industry ministers such as Prime Minister-designate Andrej Babiš, minister of industry and trade Jiří Havlíček and František Bublan who is the chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Security of the Senate of the Parliament. Minister Baek is also planning to hold a briefing session on Korean nuclear power plants to help Korean companies win orders for new nuclear power plants from the Czech Republic.
