Hanil Electronics and 3M Korea said they found out that some of Hanil Electronics’ ultraviolet baby bottle sterilizers used 3M Korea’s potentially toxic filters and would voluntarily recall the products. The filters are processed with octylisothiazolinone, or OIT.

The products to be recalled are ultraviolet baby bottle sterilizers manufactured from August 2015 to June 2016. Their model numbers are HBS-900, HBS-2016, HBS-910HK and HBS-920MF. The manufacturing dates can be verified on the label plate on the back side of the products. The refill filters for the baby bottle sterilizers, which were sold during the same period, will also be recalled. Customers who purchased the refill filters can exchange or return their baby bottle sterilizers.

OIT is an antibacterial substance which are widely used in daily necessities to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria. However, 3M Korea conducted various experiments at the laboratory in the U.S. headquarters, which received certification from international authorities, such as EPA and ANSI, in order to determine the effects of its antibacterial filters on baby bottle sterilizers immediately after finding out the fact. As a result, the company found out that only a minute amount of antibacterial substances remained at baby bottles and it doesn’t have harmful effects on the body of all ages, but the two companies decided to voluntarily recall the products.

As public concerns grew over the filter due to Oxy’s toxic humidifier disinfectants, the two companies reported the fact to the authorities and decided to recall the products. According to Hanil Electronics, consumers were just surprised after revealing such a measure and no one hasn’t reported the damage case yet.
