Market research firm UBI research said on March 16 that the amount of AMOLED panels to be produced by South Korean manufacturers this year is likely to reach 270 million units take up 95% of the global shipments. It added that South Korean suppliers in the market are expected to record US$14.218 billion in sales this year, equivalent to 96% of the global sales, and they would be able to maintain a global market share of at least 70% in 2020.
It is Samsung Electronics that is the largest customer in the global AMOLED panel market. According to the market research firm, Samsung Electronics is predicted to sell at least 47 million Galaxy series smartphones equipped with that type of panel this year. In addition, it is said that Apple will apply the same panel to its iPhones next year. Then, Samsung Display or LG Display is likely to partner with Apple for the purpose.
Both LG Display and Samsung Display have increased their investment in AMOLED panel production lines since the beginning of this year in order to cope with a potential demand increase.
Chinese manufacturers, in the meantime, are expected to account for 4% of the global shipments this year by producing 11 million AMOLED panels. “The size of the market, which is estimated at US$15 billion for this year, is likely to top US$70 billion in 2020,” UBI research explained.
