South Korea will propose a fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication candidate technology to international mobile communication standardization organization, thereby taking the lead in international standard discussions.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that the ministry holds the 29th ITU-R WP5D, a mobile communication standardization conference of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) at Millennium Hilton Hotel in Seoul for eight days from January 31 to February 7.

The meeting started on January 31was attended by about 300 experts from government and industrial representatives from approximately 50 countries around the world. From Korea, a delegation of 28 members took part in the event. The 28 are from the government, industry and academia including the Ministry of Science and ICT, the National Radio Research Agency, the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA), the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Yonsei University and Korea University.

In particular, Korea will propose a 5G candidate technology to the ITU for the first time and start to take the initiative in setting up international standards through this conference. The 5G candidate technology to be proposed by Korea includes millimeter wave 5G technology and 5G frequency bands to be used in Korea (3.5GHz, 28GHz).

Earlier in June of 2017, Korea gleaned the opinions of the Korean industrial world and proposed 5G technology performance requirements and evaluation procedures to the ITU-R and successfully got them adopted.
