According to market research firm Kantar Worldpanel, the global market share of the iOS rose from 19.7% to 24.3% between the end of 2016 and the end of 2017.

However, the share fell from 57.5% to 51.5% in Japan during the period. Likewise, it fell from 43.6% to 39.8% in the United States, from 47.2% to 43% in Britain, from 16.8% to 15.8% in Italy, and from 24.3% to 22.7% in France.

Meanwhile, the market share of the Android OS increased by four percentage points in the United States and 6.1 percentage points in Japan. In China, in contrast, it showed a decline of five percentage points while the share of the iOS rose by the same amount.

The increase in market share in China means a lot for Apple. China is currently the third-largest market for Apple. Although the Android OS is the most popular mobile OS in the market, Apple succeeded in increasing its share in the Chinese market in spite of fierce competition with Chinese Android smartphone manufacturers. The iPhone X recorded a market share of 6% there in November last year.

In the meantime, market research firm CIRP reported on January 16 that Apple raised its market share in North America from 29% to 39% between the end of the third quarter of 2017 and the end of the following quarter. The share had been 34% at the end of 2016. Apple was followed by Samsung Electronics (32%) which ranked first in the 2nd quarter of 2017 and LG Electronics (13%).
