Apple Korea announced on January 17 that the first Apple Store in South Korea, dubbed Apple Garosugil, would be opened in Apgujeong-dong, Gangnam-gu on January 27.

The opening is somewhat belated. The first Apple Store in the world was opened in New York back in 2001. The first ones in Japan and China were opened in 2003 and 2008, respectively.

Apple users in South Korea are expecting that Apple will pay more attention to themselves after the opening of Apple Garosugil. More than 10 million iPhones were sold in South Korea during the past 10 years and Apple’s share in the South Korean market is currently over 20%. However, the country has never been on the list of countries receiving Apple’s new products ahead of the others.

When it comes to the iPhone X, the top priority markets included the United States, Canada, Australia, China, Hong Kong and Japan. Greece, Qatar, Singapore and Taiwan were put on the list in spite of their iPhone purchase volumes smaller than South Korea’s.

Apple’s after-sales service has been much less convenient in South Korea, too. Not a few customers have opted for non-Apple smartphones for the inconvenience. It is said that the opening of the Apple Store in South Korea has to do with the recent iPhone battery scandal as well.
