The Ministry of Science and ICT held a meeting with companies in the 5G industry on January 11. The meeting was attended by SK Telecom, KT, LG U+ and about 10 smaller firms providing 5G components, equipment and services.

At the meeting, Minister of Science and ICT Yoo Young-min stressed the importance of communication among those in the industry for new innovative services and market creation based on 5G. He also promised that the meeting would be a cornerstone for more cooperation between large and smaller companies in the industry.

The South Korean government is also planning to provide more policy-based support for 5G component and equipment manufacturers in that 5G hardware such as terminals and network equipment and convergence service environments are required for perfect 5G services. The government is expecting that various types of service industries will develop based on 5G and this growth of service industries will contribute to the hardware sector covering small base stations, wearable devices, self-driving cars and so on.

The participants of the meeting included those producing small cells, which are indispensable for the establishment of 5G infrastructure. Small cells are effective for data traffic dispersion and, as such, can be efficiently used in bands of local data traffic like 5G. These days, small cells are being designed to be capable of simultaneous transmission in heterogeneous networks, and foreign mobile carriers like Verizon are expressing more and more interest in this part.

“The government is in pursuit of the world’s first commercial 5G service in March 2019 as well as early establishment of 5G networks, which form the foundation of Industry 4.0,” the minister explained at the meeting, adding, “It will communicate more with those in the industry via a new task force for the purposes.” He continued to say, “The private sector’s role is very important for South Korea to be able to lead the growth of 5G in the global arena.”
