Samsung Electronics Co. has joined hands with Verizon, the largest mobile carrier in the US, to push into the US 5G wireless service market.

Samsung Electronics America announced on January 3 (local time) that it has been selected as Verizon’s partner company in 5G wireless services. Verizon plans to launch its first 5G residential broadband service, beginning in Sacramento, California, in the second half of this year.

Accordingly, Samsung Electronics will supply various network equipment and devices to Verizon. “Together with Verizon, we have explored the vast potential of 5G through market trials across the U.S.,” said Mark Louison, senior vice president and general manager of the networks division at Samsung Electronics America.

The 5G is a next-generation communications network whose speeds are 10 to 100 times faster than today's average 4G LTE connections. Since it can send and receive massive data, including videos in high resolution, quickly, it is considered a core infrastructure in the era of the fourth Industrial Revolution.

According to market research firm IHS Markit, major mobile carriers and communications equipment producers, such as Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm and Intel, are estimated to invest US$200 billion (212.12 trillion won) in 5G business every year.
