LG Display will roll out rollable organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) for TVs in 2020 for the first time in the industry.

According to the display industry on July 6, LG Display decided to produce rollable OLEDs for 55-inch and 75-inch TVs on a full scale beginning in 2020. The panel will be produced at Paju P10, an OLED- specialized production base being expanded with an investment of 10 trillion won.

A rollable 55-inch OLED TV is expected to fetch well over 30 million won. "Prices may vary somewhat depending on the appearances of rollable OLED TVs such as whether it is attached to a wall or a screen form," an official of LG Electronics said. “I have nothing to tell about rollable OLED TVs."

A rollable OLED TV can be rolled up and stored when its user does not watch it. So this model has an advantage of saving homes space. In addition to this, consumers can use rollable TVs instead of conventional beam projectors used in conference rooms.

In the display industry, LG Display’s commercialization of large rollable OLEDs is intensifying competition in the future TV market on a full scale. It is expected that rollable OLEDs will provoke a “life display” race that changes the lives of users in the world TV market where image quality competition has reached its limit.

Earlier, LG Display developed an 18-inch rollable OLED with a curvature radius of 30R (the curvature of a circle with a radius of 30 mm) for the first time in the world in 2015 and accelerated the commercialization of rollable displays.

It was reported that although LG Display took the wrap off small and medium-sized rollable OLEDs first, LG Display made such a decision as the company judged internally that it will be highly marketable to launch large OLEDs for TVs.
