It is forecast that a 40 Gbps wired Internet service, 40 times faster than current infrastructure, will make a debut as early as next year. The speed of 40 Gbps can enable an Internet user to download a 1GB movie in one second.

On Oct. 17, SK Broadband announced that the company developed “the next generation passive optical network (NG-PON) 2” platform that can realize Internet speeds of up to 40 Gbps, provided tentative service, and will commercialize the technology next year.

The NG-PON2 platform provides services by automatically selecting one of many waves from optical Internet equipment in the telecommunications room of an apartment building. This technology steadily provides services by allocating additional light wavelengths or automatically turning into different wavelengths when data transfer increases.

Currently, wired Internet can run at up to 1 Gbps. When a 40 Gbps Internet service becomes standard, it will allow smooth UHD services, virtual reality, and augmented reality, all of which require transfers of large amounts of data, the company explained.

NG-PON2 technology was developed by SK Broadband and the SK Telecom Network Technology Center based on the international standard of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). A NG-PON2 technology-based service has been tentatively provided in some parts of Seoul since September.

Among wireless telecommunication carriers, KT previously succeeded in the realization of 10 Gbps before. KT also announced that they will commercialize an Internet service at an upgraded speed step by step after next year.
