According to Hong Kong-based research firm Counterpoint Research on May 3, Samsung Electronics accounted for 28.8 percent of the U.S. market in terms of sales in March to take over the top spot for the first time in 11 months since it led the market in April last year.

Apple ranked second with a 23 percent market share, following Samsung.

Samsung Electronics was able to reclaim the No. 1 spot in the U.S. smartphone market thanks to strong sales of its latest Galaxy S7 flagship smartphone. The Galaxy S7 has received a better consumer response than the previous model in the U.S. and Europe. Also, the company benefited as its biggest rival Apple showed slow sales of the iPhone 6S.

LG Electronics, which had been strong in the U.S. market, came in third with a 17.1 percent market share. However, the market share will increase further in April as sales of its latest G5 flagship smartphone were not reflected in statistics of March.

On the other hand, Chinese smartphone makers showed poor sales in the market. Huawei accounted for just 1 percent of the U.S. market. ZTE took fourth place with a 6.6 percent market share, following Alcatel with a 4.5 percent market share.
