Samsung Display has started production of active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) panels for Samsung Electronics’ strategic smartphones, Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge to be launched on Feb. 21. In particular, the company plans to secure facilities with a monthly production capacity of 9 million panels for the Galaxy S7 Edge, which uses the flexible OLED display panel, for smooth supply.

According to industry sources on Feb. 14, Samsung Display has begun the operation of the A2 and Tangjeong A3 flexible OLED lines at the Asan plant in South Chungcheong Province in earnest in order to produce panels for the Galaxy S7 Edge. Its A2 5.5-generation line can produce up to 24,000 pieces of mother glass per month, while the A3 6-generation line produces 15,000 pieces per month.

On the average, a piece of the 6-generaiton mother glass can manufacture 300 5-inch panels for mobile phones, while that of the 5.5-generation can produce 220 panels for smartphones. However, the figure can change according to process yield rates. Industry watchers estimate that the two lines can manufacture up to 9 million flexible OLED panels per month when they have the maximum yield rates.

This is in stark contrast to the situation last year when the company found itself in short supply of panels for the Galaxy S6 Edge. In the first quarter of 2015, the Galaxy S6 Edge was in short supply in the smartphone market for a long time. This was because it was difficult for the A2 line, which was Samsung Display’s only flexible OLED production line at the time, to meet the growing demand. Accordingly, Samsung Display started the operation of the new A3 line in advance to fulfill orders.
